L’Abcdr du Son continues to cultivate its rap obsession. After the beautiful work released in 2019 to celebrate its 20 years of existence, the webzine is this time undertaking to shed light on the first golden age of French rap: that of the 1990s, the decade of its explosion.   From Rapattitude – the first compilation of its kind – to KLR by the Saïan Supa Crew, from Le Monde de Devenir by Suprême NTM to Si Dieu willing… by the Fonky Family, French rap then became essential in record stores, in the media and, more widely in the cultural landscape. It is with hindsight and passion that this rise in power must be discovered.   It is explored through 200 commented discs, by the editorial staff of Abcdr du Son or by the authors of the chosen works. The classics of IAM, MC Solaar, Ministry A.M.E.A.,La Cliqua or Lunatic sit alongside releases that have not benefited from the same media coverage. Sometimes singular, sometimes enigmatic, these albums also say something of this effervescence.   An ideal nightclub for understanding the genre and its impact in France, the work is also a retrospective of an era. É significant events and gender transformation bear witness to a culture in full swing, between aesthetic research and political concerns, a taste for independence and a thirst for recognition.   With this ambition to illuminate the memories of those who were 18 years old in 1998 as well as to put in the hands of today's youth the history of music that has been constantly in motion for more than 30 years. Launched in 2000, L'Abcdr du Son is in many ways the fruit of the 1990s of French rap. After celebrating the genre in 2019 with the book L'Obsession Rap, the webzine continues, more than 20 years after its launch, to document the news and history of the scene with intact enthusiasm.
