Alpha lipoic acid (1,2-dithiolane-3-valeric acid) is a sulfur-containing fatty acid that occurs naturally in the human body. Alpha lipoic acid is both water and fat soluble and is also produced by the body itself. Studies have shown that alpha-lipoic acid is excellently absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and quickly distributed throughout the body. Alpha lipoic acid as a dietary supplement with pure endogenous R-alpha lipoic acid is therefore preferable to a dietary supplement with a 1:1 mixture of natural and synthetic alpha lipoic acid.
