It is native to southern Europe and is cultivated for its oil in France and Russia. During menopause, this oil is believed to reduce hot flashes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability, as well as headaches and dizziness. It has been used as an aphrodisiac. It is also good for digestion and the kidneys. Clary sage oil should be avoided when consuming alcohol, as it may increase intoxication. Use in small amounts as a large dose may cause a headache.In the Middle Ages, it was known as Oculus Christi, which meant "the eye of Christ." It has been a highly valued medicine ever since. In Jamaica, it was used by the local population to cleanse and cool ulcers and for eye inflammation.
