Origin France Originally from the Near East, chickpeas were cultivated in the 12th millennium BC along with cereals, peas and lentils. It quickly established itself in India where it became the main legume and the staple food of the Indians. The Phoenicians would have introduced it successfully in Spain and it will appear on the American continent during the conquests. In Europe and America, we grow and eat kabuli type grains (large off-white grains); on the other hand, in Asia, India, Africa and Australia, the varieties cultivated are of the desi type, i.e. black or brown seeds which are smaller.
