A very ancient grape variety, but the first document on Barbera d’Asti DOCG is found in a seventeenth-century writing preserved in the municipality of Nizza Monferrato in Piedmont. In 1798 it officially entered the list of Piedmontese vines when the first Ampelography was drawn up by the Agricultural Society of Turin, in which we read about barbera: "It is a well-known vine and one of the main bases of the wines of Asti and the lower Monferrato, where it is indigenous and has been cultivated for a very long time ". DOC denomination since 1970, DOCG obtained in 2008.
