Straddling Irpinia and Sannio, in the territory between Abellinum and the ancient Roman colony of Beneventum, lie the vineyards of Greco di Tufo, Fiano, Falangina, Aglianico and Coda di Volpe. These are the precious vines from which the fine wines produced by the County dé Altavilla company derive. ls.’the area belonged in the past to the Grand Counts De Capua, who here owned the territories of Altavilla, Tufo, Barba, Ceppaloni, Chianchetelle, Grottolella, Prata di Principato Ultra and Terranova d'Arpaise. Count Andrea was also part of this family of feudal lords, particularly influential in the Middle Ages due to its enormous wealth and the special favors received from the Angevin kings. In 1392 he was chosen by King Ladislaus as the second husband of the beautiful Costanza Di Chiaromonte, a queen repudiated by the King himself, accompanied by a dowry of three thousand ducats. On this occasion the De Capuas also obtained some of the best lands in the Kingdom. . . the same ones that today constitute the Greco di Tufo area. This is the land where the climate-territory combination is absolutely unique and is rich in sulfur and other minerals suitable for the cultivation of the "Greco di Tufo" vine. Here our company grows vines that were introduced with Greek colonization and produces wines that make this territory a small enclave... a jewel of Italian oenology.
