He was elected President in 1789 and served two terms totaling eight years. 

Washington was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and a key figure in the American Revolution. 

He was also a veteran soldier and led the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. 

As President, he was responsible for building the new United States government and guiding the country through its difficult early years.
