The painting Mona Lisa, also known as La Gioconda, was painted by the Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci in the early 16th century. 

The painting depicts a woman referred to as the Mona Lisa, believed to be the portrait of Lisa del Giocondo, wife of Francesco del Giocondo.  The painting was probably painted between 1503 and 1506 and is one of the most recognized and celebrated paintings in the world today. 

Located in the Louvre Museum in Paris, it is considered one of the masterpieces of the Renaissance.  The painting is notable for its realistic depiction of the woman, brought to life through the use of shading and contrast. 

It is also known for its air of mystery, which is due to the painting being viewed from the side, with the woman's gaze directed downwards.
