The flag of Great Britain, also known as the Union Jack, was designed in 1606 and consists of the flags of England, Scotland and Ireland. 

The flag was so named because it displays the heraldic emblem of the British royal family, the so-called "Union Badge". 

The Union Badge consists of the Cross of Saint Andrew for Scotland, the Cross of Saint George for England and the Cross of Saint Patrick for Ireland. 

The flag has been changed several times over the years to include the flag of Wales, but the "Union Jack" name has stuck.
