POST-BINARY TYPOGRAPHY BEYOND INCLUSIVE WRITING

How can we overcome the gender binarity characteristic of the French language? This work first returns to the appearance of so-called inclusive and non-binary writing, to outline the beginnings of a post-binary approach to typography. By recalling the political scope of type design, Camille Circlude shows how the field of typographic design now offers a new space allowing writing to embrace the vast prism of genres, beyond binarity. Typography is thus understood as an emancipatory technology that allows us to resist hegemony and inhabit the hybridization of forms. Today, it offers the possibility of materializing queer, non-binary, genderfluid, agender and genderfuck existences in these shared and symbolic spaces that are language and writing. By mobilizing the concept of political post-binarism, the author, a founding member of the Bye Bye Binary collective, invites us to adopt a political position that allows the affirmation of new statements of self. Camille Circlude takes stock of six years of experimentation (2017-2023) of a practice that continues to spread and continues to be written in the present.
