Actually, since 2000, a steadily growing flock of rheas has been living in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein. At that time, a small group of the large birds escaped from an enclosure near Lübeck. Contrary to all expectations, the birds survived the first winter and were even able to expand their group.
