Organic Basil Leaf

Organic basil, a member of the Lamiaceae, is an aromatic herb prized for its distinctive aroma reminiscent of cloves, nutmeg and anise when crushed. Organic basil, grown through organic farming, is a plant native to South Asia and Central Africa, imported to Egypt around 4,000 years ago. Basil is often associated with Mediterranean and Asian gastronomy, with its leaves being the parts most used in cooking.  In addition to its culinary role, basil has cultural significance, being given as an offering to Krishna in India and Nepal, and celebrated annually in Bétera, Spain, with a competition for the tallest basil bush.  The health benefits of organic basil are numerous, particularly due to its richness in antioxidants, vitamin K, fiber, calcium, potassium, beta-carotene, vitamin C, folate, linalool, estragol, glucoside, tannins and saponins. Its properties include relieving stomach upset, preventing bloating and constipation, strengthening the immune system, fighting free radicals, managing oxidative stress, and maintaining optimal functioning of the nervous system.  In cooking, basil is versatile, adding its freshness to salads, sauces, omelettes, pesto, soups, stews, fish, chicken, pizzas, pastas, desserts with strawberries, apricots and mint. However, due to its fragility, it is recommended to add it at the end of cooking or when serving to preserve its fragrance and flavor. Using organic basil also helps limit the ingestion of pesticides.
