Poster of the map of the city of Leeuwarden around 1664. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were a golden age for Leeuwarden. Leeuwarden gained prestige because it became the residence of the Frisian Nassaus who became stadtholder of the northern provinces. In these centuries the city flourished. The number of inhabitants rose from 5,000 around 1500 to 16,000 in 1650. Leeuwarden was then one of the ten most important cities in the Netherlands. The map was made by well-known cartographer Bernardus Schotanus à Sterringa. We also sell matching frames in different colors. Different format or paper?
