Posters Historical World Map 1630 - Henricus Hondius

Poster of the detailed, decorative Hondius world map. First published in the 1630 edition of the Atlas Mercator-Hondius, in response to competition from Willem Blaeu. California is shown as an island. The huge southern continent (Terra Australis Incognita) is shown, with no signs of New Zealand or Australia. Korea is now referred to as an isthmus, no longer represented as an island, with a large and impressive early representation of the Philippines below. In South America, the Strait of Le Maire now appears, although Hondius still refers to a narrow channel between Terra Australis and Tierra del Fuego. In North America, a huge western landmass referred to as Nova Albion (New England) is shown, with Cape Mendocino within a few hundred miles of Japan. We also sell matching frames in different colors.
