 Role in the ecosystem This will surely surprise you, but the fur of the sloth is an ecosystem in itself and allows it to live, but also butterflies and insects! Indeed, its texture allows rainwater to be retained, which in turn allows the development of algae which the sloth feeds on by licking itself. 

This algae produces carbohydrates and lipids but needs nitrogen to develop, this is where the butterflies come into play which will provide it by defecating on the animal. 

These same butterflies, as well as insects, lay eggs on the sloth's excrement to feed their larvae.
