The GPO (General Post Office) was created by Oliver Cromwell's Parliament in 1657, who declared: "There shall be a General Post Office and an officer named Postmaster General of England." However, Charles II did not recognize any of Cromwell's laws, so he issued a very similar law in 1660, which confirmed the formation of The Post Office. The act made GPO the sole carrier of postage in the UK and prohibited all competition.
