The style of Grootzus (Francien Verhulst) can best be described as imaginative collage art. She creates festive dream worlds from existing drawn images, which often feature funny animals, people, flowers and buildings. Gathered together from an enormous history of illustrations, homemade or cut from special books, bent into her own fairy tale.
Francien about her work: “Making pictures is the best thing there is. Making things more beautiful than they are, within given frameworks. I really get the ingredients for my collages from everywhere. At flea markets I buy old books, games, stamps, postcards and packaging material. And of course I also get pictures from the internet. I photograph everything that I like: structures, colors and shapes. There is a special decoration in every detail. I keep all pictures in a huge archive. By combining the different techniques, structures and drawing styles of the existing images, an exciting, new world is created. A dream world that I can come up with all by myself.”
