Grutte Pier Brouwerij was created in 2014, at the regular table of specialty beer Café de Markies in Leeuwarden. Here we, Frans Filius and Renze Bil, get to know the innovative flavors of specialty beer. With a StiBON education in his pocket, an excellent nose for smell, color and taste and a good dose of guts and entrepreneurship, Frans started experimenting with the classic Belgian beer styles he loved so much. Renze distributes the first brews (then still in relatively small numbers) from his own shed to local cafes in Leeuwarden and the surrounding area. The Grutte Pier Brouwerij brand was born: a specialty beer that owes its name to the heroic Frisian folk hero and freedom fighter Pier Gerlofs Donia.
The brewery has now grown into one of the largest specialty beer brands in Friesland and we are widely known among liquor stores, supermarkets, wholesalers, fairs and festivals in the North and beyond.
