Innovative, sustainable and personal. That’s what HEROSAN stands for. The roots of HEROSAN lie in 1894. Founded by the Herneth family in Styria and still run today as a medium-sized horticultural business, 130 years of tradition and experience in plant breeding have accumulated. An enormous wealth of knowledge that was given an innovation boost in 2019 by two “young wild ones.” With Conny Pint and Daniel Taurer on board, HEROSAN, just founded, succeeded in disrupting the entire European pet food market.
Indication-based products made from innovative raw materials of the highest quality, produced regionally, underpinned by ethical values and a strong focus on sustainability – this has never existed in this form before.
Why insect protein?
Insect protein is neither fish nor meat – and that’s a good thing! A food allergy, the fear word of many dog and cat owners, affects almost one in three pets. In Germany alone, around 3 million dogs would be confronted with the problem, and in Austria around 190.000.
In dogs, food allergy is said to be responsible for over 1% of all skin diseases and 10% of all allergic skin diseases. If you add up intolerances to food, including allergies and intolerances, studies have already found that over 60% of illnesses occur. A food allergy is said to be the third most common allergic skin disease in dogs after flea bite allergy and atopy.
Allergy, intolerance, intolerance?
These terms are often mixed up, but differentiation is important for optimal feeding. The difference between “allergy” and “intolerance” lies in the body’s reaction to the ingredient. Intolerance is a metabolic disorder and the gastrointestinal tract shows reactions. In a true allergy, the immune system sees the substance as an invader and fights it with all its might. The most common symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite and even weight loss. In the case of local skin diseases, the face, paws, armpits and ears of dogs and cats are particularly affected by sometimes severe inflammation. One study even reported dogs suffering from musculoskeletal disorders, central nervous system disorders, and idiopathic epilepsy associated with allergies.
Hope for pet owners
HEROSAN has addressed precisely these problems and, after years of research, developed an innovative solution. Common foods mentioned in connection with allergies and intolerances are: beef, milk, chicken, turkey and wheat, as well as eggs, soybeans, lamb, pork, fish and corn. These are precisely the products that are excluded from the entoVITAL products. But how is protein supplied? Here HEROSAN takes the innovative approach – with insect protein!
Insect Protein – The Benefits
HEROSAN has developed entoVITAL, a hypoallergenic nutritional concept based on Hermetia Illucens (soldier fly), which is free from grains and other animal protein sources. Dry food, wet food, snacks, dental sticks and lick pastes – the portfolio is enormous! This makes entoVITAL the only full-range product with insect protein in Europe.
The advantages of this innovative solution are enormous!
•Insect protein is cruelty-free.
•Space-saving. HEROSAN does not require any pasture land for production; the production area is 12 times smaller than for the production of, for example, Beef protein.
•No slaughterhouse waste. The edible portion of the larvae is 100 percent.
•Minimizing the ecological footprint. Compared to livestock, insects produce around 90 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2).
•For environmentally conscious and sustainable pet owners.
•Insect protein is hypoallergenic. It is ideal for the special needs of animals with intolerances and allergies.
•No antibiotic resistance. entoVITAL products are proven to be free of enterococci, thus reducing the risk of feed-related antibiotic resistance for the animal, which also offers better treatment options for veterinarians.
ÜBy the way: The insect larvae are produced by HEROSAN – in keeping with the spirit of sustainability and regionality – in a circular economy in Austria and Germany. This means that entoVITAL buyers can rely on the highest quality and production reliability.
"Your pet can also be an environmental ambassador – reduce animal suffering – avoid animal transport – feed sustainably and environmentally consciously."
