Risography is not only incredibly beautiful, but also one of the most environmentally friendly printing processes: the printing ink is made from rice bran oil, a waste product from rice production, and the master films are made from hemp fibers. In addition, the Riso requires only a fraction of the energy of a digital printing machine. Risography is a stencil printing process that works similarly to screen printing. This means that one print pass takes place per color. For this purpose, a master film, similar to the screen in screen printing, is stretched onto the ink drum, which then applies the ink to the paper in a rotating motion.
Risography is not a printing process like digital printing: the machine is idiosyncratic and produces perfectly imperfect prints. This includes a certain offset and a varying application of paint. But that is exactly what makes each print so special and unique.
