Monochrome Cotton & Jute Basket

This functional yet fantastic storage basket has an eclectic aesthetic and seamlessly blends into contemporary living spaces.  Featuring jute and cotton, it is as eco-friendly, sustainable and durable as can be.  Moreover, it could double up as a planter for a coy corner plant in any home!  A favorite among environmentalists, jute has a negligible carbon footprint.  It is also biodegradable and 100% compostable.  The fibers are first extracted by a process called retting wherein jute stems are bundled together and immersed in low, running water.  After which, in a process called stripping, the non-fibrous matter is scraped off, while the fibers found inside the jute stem are retained for hand braiding by talented women artisans from India.  The textile is a result of skillful handweaving, a strenuous process that requires perfect rhythm and coordination.  The craft has remained true to its roots even in the face of severe competition from power looms and employs more than 4.4 million weaver families!
