As a result of the interest in children's literature, in the 1960s Gianni Rodari toured Italian schools «to tell stories and answer children's questions. Because, in fact, there is always a child who asks how are stories invented?, and deserves an honest answer. Through direct contact with the students, Rodari observes, talks and takes notes, trying to discover the procedures of the art of creating stories. This activity will be the basis for his most important theoretical work, "Grammatica della fantasia" (1973), which took shape in a meeting with teachers in which Rodari participated in 1972, invited by the Reggio Emilia City Council.
