After working as a computer engineer, I decided to leave the digital world and get my hands back in the soil. After a BPREA, I decided to create La Fabrique aux Légumes in 2022, with the desire to start from seeds and end up on your plates. After some training to master the preservation processes, I built a laboratory on the farm, 100m from the field, in order to have the shortest possible circuit.’
Agriculture that cares for biodiversity
Inspired by Living Soil Market Gardening, our farming practices have two main objectives:
To nourish and care for the soil
To maintain the field's ecosystem balance
To achieve this, we do not till the soil. No tilling = less CO2 released ;)
We fertilize our fields using only organic compounds, such as wood chips, which we spread at the end of the season. A green manure is then sown to ensure constant soil cover. In the spring, we cut this fertilizer and then spread tarpaulins over it for 3 weeks to ensure its proper destruction. We are then ready to come and plant our lovely little vegetables.’
In terms of ecosystem balance, culture inevitably induces a disruption of the system. However, we try to rebalance the ecosystem as soon as any pressure is felt. For example, we sow ladybug flowers to prevent aphid infestations. Similarly, we have installed shelters for hedgehogs so that they eat the slugs that LOVE to huddle under the tarpaulins.’
An end-to-end approach
The farm's impacts are not limited to cultivation. Therefore, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce them. In 2024, we installed a Jean Pain generator to heat a seedling table using hot water produced by the decomposition of wood chips. We grow all our own plants, so this second table will be very useful to us in the spring!’
For our seedlings, we transplant our small plants into plugs which we press by hand, thus eliminating the need for plastic pots.’
And in the kitchen too, we try to reduce our impact. Our recipes are 100% plant-based in order to have the lowest possible carbon footprint. We work with local producers whenever possible.
