Although there are indeed animals in this album, none actually appear in the image! The child plays to recognize them without any other clue than their color. Thanks to the multitude of representations that he has drawn from reality and fiction, he can project the image that his mind chooses, a mental recreation which amplifies pleasure. The large format of the book and the stencilled typography give this exercise in abstraction a warm energy.
