" "Letterpress" is the English name for an old printing technique: typography. This process, which dates back to Gutenberg, consists of pressing the paper onto an inked assembly of lead or wooden characters, or onto an engraved plate serving as a stamp. Gradually modernized, thanks in particular to the mechanization of presses, typography remained the most widespread printing technique for five centuries, before being supplanted by offset printing and then doomed to disappear from the 1980s onwards when digital technologies took hold.
