Spirit of Sankt Augustin - Single Malt New Make

The name is based on the "Spirit of St. Louis" and so the label is also adorned with an airplane. Both are references to our home Sankt Augustin-Hangelar with its airfield in Germany that has been in operation for over 100 years and is therefore the oldest (Bonn/Hangelar Airfield, EDKB - see Wikipedia). It is punchy but not sharp, has fine notes of fruit on the nose and on the palate with malty-sweet aromas reminiscent of caramel and pastries. Fruit, caramel and grandma's cookies - delicious! One speaks of New Make, New Spirit, New Make Spirit, Moonshiner or White Dog when the freshly distilled malt brandy has not yet seen the inside of a barrel. In principle, it is freshly distilled and unaged whisky, which, however, cannot yet be called whisky. For this, it must first be matured in oak barrels in order to be allowed to bear this designation. The New Make is the basis for our whiskey, which is currently maturing and is distilled by Frank Ginsberg in Windeck. For bottling our New Make Spirit, the distillate is reduced to a drinking strength of 44% vol., unlike for cask aging, where it has more than 60% vol. when the casks are filled.
