Van Gogh saw The Potato Eaters as a showpiece for which he deliberately chose a difficult composition to prove that he was on the way to becoming a good figure painter. The painting was meant to depict the harsh reality of rural life, so he gave the peasants rough faces and bony, working hands. It is one of Van Gogh's most famous works. ©Van Gogh Museum, © VGME B.V.
