In an 1888 letter to his brother Theo, referring to the postman Joseph-Étienne Roulin, who had become his friend, Van Gogh wrote: "Now I am working with another model, a postman in a blue uniform with gold trim, a large, bearded face, very Socratic.(...)A more interesting man than many people."He painted more portraits of the postman Roulin than of any other person, except himself.
