This painting of wild roses may look very pleasant and peaceful, but Van Gogh was suffering from a severe mental crisis at that time. Van Gogh painted the delicate flowers in a naturalistic manner. But he treated the green leaves differently. He transformed them into flat, monochrome surfaces surrounded by heavy blue outlines. ©Van Gogh Museum, © VGME B.V.
