The Himba women have traditionally used the resin for centuries as an ingredient in their perfume mixed with ocher as a body cream and of course as an incense resin. The resin is sent to the processing plant in Opuwo, owned by the local community. There the resin is made into incense or steam distilled to extract the essential oil. The pieces are different in size and some stick together. The color of the resin varies from light yellow-orange amber to brown. The lighter pieces have a fresher scent and crumble when dry faster.
