It is native to California and western North America, but is also grown in other parts of the world for its medicinal properties and its pretty yellow or orange flowers. The escholtzia can reach up to 40 cm in height and has light green leaves finely cut into linear segments. Escholtzia flowers are solitary and about 5 cm in diameter. They have four ruffled petals of yellow, orange or pink color and a center of bright orange or yellow color. The flowers usually bloom in spring and summer and are followed by capsule-shaped fruits containing numerous small seeds. ֍ The escholtzia is also known as the "California poppy", because it looks like the common poppy, but it is not from the same family. This plant was first described by the German botanist Adelbert von Chamisso during an expedition along the west coast of North America in 1815. Chamisso gave the name Eschscholzia in honor of his friend and fellow botanist Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz, who took part in the same expedition.
