The African elephant is today the largest land animal, it can measure up to 4m high and weigh about 7 tons. It lives mainly in sub-Saharan Africa but also in northern South Africa. This mammal is easily recognizable thanks to its long ivory tusks, which alone can weigh up to 100kg, and its trunk which it uses to feed. Unlike its cousin, the Asian elephant, it has larger ears, less hair and a more rounded back. The species is now in decline due to poaching but also the gradual destruction of its habitat.
