Feminine sculpture

This book traces five centuries of sculpture through the work of 300 female artists from 64 countries. The sculptors gathered here represent multiple movements, genres and techniques, but have in common their imagination and their unfailing creativity. Third part of a collection in response to Linda Nochlin’s seminal essay published in 1971, “Why have there been no great women artists?” ",This book celebrates the life and work of those who placed sculpture at the center of their art. The sculpture defies categorization. Whether temporary or permanent, installed indoors or outdoors, small or large, whether sculptures or casts, assemblages or in situ installations, whether made of marble, wood, textile or ceramic, the works in this book reveal the immense artistic talent of the women who have adopted this medium marked by its plasticity. Among the artists presented here, some created sculptural works even though they were refused training or did not have the means to make their work visible, others were neglected by history, and still others were recognized during their lifetime. Together, they tell a more diverse version of the history of sculpture. Presenting female sculptors in alphabetical order, Sculpture au féminin invites us to establish new links and surprising juxtapositions between artists and works that go beyond chronological or geographical classifications. Each artist is presented by an explanatory text illustrated with a key work. This book highlights great figures of sculpture, historical and contemporary, as well as rising stars, in order to bear witness to the creativity of women artists of the past while offering perspectives to future generations.
