The long, flexible leaves of the seaweed are carefully harvested by hand, cut into thin strips and then gently dried. When selecting our local production partners, we value fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to the finished bag For our Kidul bags, some of the seagrass fibers are cut into strips and dyed black. The experienced artisans at our production partners on the Indonesian island of Bali then carefully and delicately weave the fibers around a specially made wooden frame that precisely defines the desired shape and size of the bag. The dyed and natural fibers are artfully arranged in a striped pattern. In total, it takes about three hours to make a bag.
