Due to hand manufacturing and natural variations in materials, they may vary slightly in size, color and shape. -------------------------------------------------- ------------------- Main material: water hyacinth Our baskets are made from plant fibers. They therefore smell and feel wonderfully natural. Water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows on rivers and lakes. It actually comes from South America, but was also introduced into Southeast Asia. There it is considered a weed because it reproduces incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen causes all life underwater to die, which is why the plants must be removed regularly. To prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is an abundant, sustainable raw material for many woven goods here at Soeji! -------------------------------------------------- ------------------- Place of production: This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia. When selecting our local producers, we value fair pay and good working conditions. Only adult and experienced artisans work in the companies from which we purchase our goods. No harmful chemicals are used during production. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
