After extraction, the clay is cleaned and mixed with water, which makes it pliable and malleable. Craftsmen use it to make vases, bowls and many other everyday objects. The material is then fired at high temperatures, which gives it its strength and durability. This processing makes clay a durable and versatile material. Additional material: Rattan ➤ Our production partners: Strictly selected according to fair trade criteria When selecting our local production partners, we attach importance to fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are exclusively adult and experienced artisans. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, as they can use the skills they learned at an early age to earn money and pass on traditional manufacturing methods to the younger generation. They often told us how happy they were to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living through this work. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process hardly produces any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies. ➤The manufacturing process: From raw material to the finished vase For our Tuban vases, the experienced artisans at our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java model the clay into the desired round shape using a potter's wheel. After the firing process, several holes are carefully drilled around the opening to attach the decorative woven rattan to the vase. The vase is then given a double coat of white paint. In total, the production of a vase takes about 1.5 hours.
