Vintage Kantha, Random Selection

Exquisite and unique cotton throws made from recycled saris. Approximate dimensions: 220 x 160 cm (each piece is different). The word Kantha comes from the Sanskrit word Kontha, which means "pieces of cloth." This craft has evolved over centuries, originating from the tradition of rural women in the eastern states of India—West Bengal and Orissa—as well as Bangladesh, of stitching together scraps of salvaged fabric to make blankets. The makers of these beautiful textiles skillfully adorn the repurposed saris using a regular stitch, a technique known as Kantha. They transform each piece of used fabric into a work of art and a testimony to artisanal heritage. This work also provides financial independence to women living in rural areas where it is difficult to find paid employment. Each piece is unique and handmade. Any imperfections are part of the object's history. Please note that these pieces have visible repairs and signs of wear related to previous use of the fabric.
