Khadi cotton is both hand spun and hand woven, resulting in a softer, finer fabric. Our throws are very soft, woven by a community of women in northern India. Crafts: Khadi is made by hand in Indian homes, from a cotton, silk or wool thread spun on a wheel, or "charkha". It is woven with the greatest respect for the environment, using few resources such as water or electricity, and it is strong and resistant. Khadi is a unique Indian fabric, appreciated not only because it is entirely handmade, but also for its cultural significance. This textile tradition was revived by Mahatma Gandhi, who saw this fabric as a tool to bring financial independence to Indians across the country who would practice this craft at home. In his own words: “The spinning wheel represents for me the hope of the masses. The masses lost their freedom, such as it was, with the disappearance of the Charkha. The Charkha complemented the agriculture of the villagers and gave it dignity.”
