Sporting an earthy, geometric band of baked tile and sand across its middle, our HURU baskets are produced in three different sizes, so youโll find one for every home storage need. The beauty of woven baskets is that their uses will keep evolving with your needs: fill yours with pens and pencils or make up and jewellery, slippers, gloves, scarves and rugs, toys and craft materials and bathroom supplies. These woven baskets also make excellent woven planters for your houseplants and will bring surprise and joy as new home gifts. The craftswomen behind our HURU natural woven baskets all learned to weave sisal from their mothers and grandmothers, and work within a small weaving collective in rural Kenya. We visit this group as often as we can, and enjoy a strong bond with the women and their chairlady, Madam Dorcas. Where once these weavers would travel regularly to Nairobi to sell their woven baskets at markets, The Basket Room now places regular orders with them, enabling these women to work from home. As demand for our beautiful baskets increases, this talented group continues to thrive and grow. Basket production takes place primarily during the dry seasons, since most of these weavers are from farming communities who rely on farming (and rainfall) to feed, support and clothe their families. To buy one of our woven baskets is to support us empowering African craftswomen and protecting this age-old craft. You can read more about these weavers HERE.
