The Takhi wild horses (also Przewalski horses) were considered extinct in the wild for a long time. Until the late 18th century. In the 18th century, wild horses populated an area from Russia through Kazakhstan to Mongolia and northern China. In the 1960s, the last takhi was sighted in Mongolia. However, due to a targeted release plan for the animals that had been living in captivity in zoos throughout their lives, 16 horses were released into Hustai National Park in Mongolia in 1992.   There are currently around 200 adult animals in Mongolia. They are considered highly endangered, but their numbers are steadily increasing.
