Our winery is located in the heart of the Nahe wine region. Wine was already cultivated here in Celtic times. The Romans systematically developed wine culture in our region.’
The Disibodenberg winery originated in the early Middle Ages as a farm belonging to the Disibodenberg monastery. It is located on the grounds of the former monastery mill. The monastery achieved worldwide cultural and historical fame because Hildegard von Bingen lived here for over 30 years and her most famous work, "Liber Scivias," was created here. After the secularization of the monastery during the Reformation, the mill and vineyards came into the possession of the territorial rulers, the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken.’
From the middle of the 18th century. From the 19th century until 1992, the winery was managed by the Schmidt family from Odernheim, who redesigned the business at the end of the 1960s, significantly expanding the vineyard holdings and establishing a new winery. A special feature of their concept was the concentration on Burgundy varieties, especially Pinot Noir, which was completely unusual in the Nahe region at that time.’
In 1992, Christian Held joined the management of the winery as a career changer and personally liable partner. German viticulture is currently undergoing a period of transition. Farms operating on steep slopes with high operating costs require a consistent focus on producing top-quality products. A dedicated group of shareholders has been found who recognized the potential of the Odernheim vineyards to continue producing wines of first-class international quality in the future. With the addition of Thomas Zenz, a graduate engineer in viticulture, who took over the operational management of the company in 1997, the ideal winemaker was found to consistently implement a long-term quality strategy. In order to build a financially sound business, the cultivated areas were expanded, the now very renowned sparkling wine production was established, the Boos von Waldeckscher Hof distillery was founded, the Meisenheimer Hof wine hotel was opened in 2013 and the winery was completely renovated in 2017.’
This year, the areas of the former Racknitz winery at Disibodenberg were also integrated into the business. As a result, one of the oldest vineyards in Germany and one of the best Riesling sites came into the possession of the winery, which now cultivates 22 hectares. Since the 1st.04.In 2019, this development is reflected in the name Weingut Disibodenberg.’
