Founder and Chief Whale of Whale Bags Ltd., Carolyn was born in South Africa and spent much of her childhood in Kinshasa, Congo before living in Paris, UK and Germany. Carolyn is an enthusiastic, vivacious character who lives life to the full. Her love of travel, nature and adventure has taken her to many parts of the globe: kayaking in New Zealand; safari in Kenya; climbing in Chile; whale watching in Canada; diving in Egypt and meditating in Bali. She loves nothing more than to be immersed in nature and she has made it her life mission to protect the environment.

Carolyn founded Whale Bags Ltd. in 2007 after learning that plastic was devastating the oceans; she read an article about a whale that had died from ingesting plastic and decided to take action – determined to help people stop using plastic bags she designed her organic cotton bags as alternatives. Core to the business is the desire to create to innovative products that help people reduce their impact on the environment. Whale Bags’ products are as sustainable as possible. The materials used are organic, recycled or re-used. Even the toggles on the organic cotton bags are manufactured from fallen, harvested twigs; the dyes are Azo free; and the labels are made from recycled cardboard. In addition, practicality is key if we want consumers to change behaviour surrounding plastic. Whalebags are strong and convenient fitting into any pocket or bag. Finally, Carolyn believes that people should be treated fairly and with respect. When choosing a supplier to make the bags it was very important to visit the factory to ensure that standards were being met. She is very confident and proud to be working with a family run company in India that specialises in organic cotton.
