It is also called Andean berry, which indicates its origin. The Andean berry is also grown in South Africa, but actually comes from the Peruvian Andes. In English, the physalis is called "Cape Gooseberry" and describes the delicate and wonderful cape, i.e. the leaf covering of the actual berry (please also have a look at the descriptive pictures). After flowering, the leaves grow together, forming a kind of 'protective house' for the berries developing underneath...isn't nature indescribably magical?
