CITRULLINE MALATE

Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid. It plays a particularly important role, with ornithine and arginine, in the urea cycle.   During this cycle, the toxic ammonium ion is converted to urea. A disruption of this cycle, essential for the elimination of toxic nitrogen metabolites, can result in the lethal accumulation of proteins, such as ammonia, in the bloodstream.   Citrulline or arginine supplementation is often recommended to treat these disorders.   Citrulline is also a precursor to arginine produced as part of this cycle.
