Geta are traditional Japanese wooden sandals, once worn daily, and today mainly during festivals or with traditional clothing such as yukata or kimono. They are distinguished by their wooden sole raised by two blocks called ha (teeth), which keep the foot away from the ground, thus protecting clothing from dirt or humidity. A fabric strap, the hanao, passes between the big toe and the second toe to hold the foot. Although wearing them requires a certain balance, geta embody the rustic elegance of ancient Japan and remain a powerful cultural symbol.
