According to Indian mythology, sage Dhanvantari appeared at the end of the "Churning of the Ocean" with the sacred "Amrit," the nectar of immortality. In his avatar of Divodasa (King of the ancient kingdom of Kashi) he was approached by sages to teach them Ayurveda: thus he started spreading the teachings of Ayurveda, which he had received from Lord Indra. His specialty was surgery (Shalya Chikitsa), and the well-known physician Sushruta who lived around 1000 BC. lived and worked in the city of Benares and was a writer of the Sushruta Samhita, was one of his most famous disciples.
