About the gem: Its name is of Latin origin, lapis meaning stone and lazuli, azure. Like turquoise, Lapis Lazuli has been sought after by men since the dawn of time. The ancient Egyptians used it to carve amulets. The Babylonians used it as a medicine for melancholy. The Greeks and Romans saw it as the symbol of divine power and gave it powerful aphrodisiac powers. Lapis lazuli was used as a pigment to obtain the ultramarine blue color in painting and dyeing until the end of the 19th century, when synthetic dyes were created. Currently, the main lapis lazuli mining sites are located in Afghanistan, Chile, Colorado, Siberia and Burma. Nowadays, lapis lazuli is reputed to be the stone of friendship because it promotes harmony in relationships. It is associated with the signs of Virgo, Sagittarius and Capricorn.
