Among the smallest countries in Africa with an area of about 1000 km2, the archipelago was nevertheless the largest cocoa producer at the beginning of the 20th century. First territory to receive Amazonian cocoa plants in 1822, São Tomé and Príncipe earned the nickname of Chocolate Island thanks to the high quality of its production, benefiting from an exceptional terroir for the cultivation of cocoa.
