Royal Jewel Beetle Collection Bell Jar

This collection of Jewel Beetles (Family: Buprestidae) have been hand set by our expert entomologists in our studio and mounted in a museum quality bell jar, embellished with an authentic, hand-pressed wax seal stamp, depicting the royal cypher of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Jewel beetles are so named due to their distinctive glossy bright colours and iridescent carapaces that create an uncanny resemblance to precious stones. In fact, their elytra have been used for decoration and jewellery by a variety of cultures, including the Jivaro people in Peru and Ecuador and the Naga in India and Myanmar. Beetle-wing (or elytra) embroidery rose to popularity in England during the eighteenth-century. Victorian women in England, America, and Australia attended balls with thousands of elytra glittering like emeralds on their light cotton dresses, making statements about their wealth, power, and worldliness. All of our specimens are ethically sourced from conservation projects around the world and help to support local communities and protect natural habitats, to learn more go to Our Ethos page.
