This Queen butterfly (Danaus chrysippus) (Family: Nymphalidae) has been hand set by our expert entomologists in our studio and mounted in a museum quality bell jar, embellished with an authentic, hand-pressed wax seal stamp, depicting the royal cypher of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen butterfly is believed to be one of the first butterflies depicted in art. A 3,500-year-old ancient Egyptian mural painting in Luxor features the oldest known illustration of this species. When butterflies were featured on Egyptian wall reliefs, their images tended to be overly large and placed close to the heavens or other symbols of life everlasting. It is believed that the butterfly’s ability to be “reborn” from its chrysalis tomb after a period of dormancy may have held great significance to the Ancient Egyptians as a symbol of transformation and spritual rebirth.
